In general terms, Medicare is the federal health benefits program for people age 65 or greater. There are 2 main ways to get Medicare coverage, including either 1) original Medicare or 2) a Medicare Advantage plan. If you choose option 1 (original Medicare), you then also have the choice of whether you want to enhance your Medicare coverage with a private Medicare supplement plan (also known as Medigap) and a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan. If instead of original Medicare you choose option 2 (a Medicare Advantage plan), that plan will be your exclusive health benefits plan, including drug coverage, through a private insurance company.
In the Prescott, Arizona area, there are 12 standardized Medicare supplement plans offered by nearly 70 insurance companies along with nearly 20 Medicare Part D prescription drug plans. There also are more than 40 Medicare Advantage plans. In total, you have hundreds of plans to choose from.
